Jack Olantern Faces Pumpkin Carving



Place your candle into your pumpkin before lighting. If you don't want to use votives, try Christmas lights, especially those that blink for a spooky appearance. Or, save yourself the stress and go with battery-operated votives instead.

Put the lid back on your pumpkin to light up your design so it’s visible. Just make sure to blow the tea lights out at the end of the night so they don’t stay lit or cause a fire. A pumpkin carving kit usually comes with a sharp tool you can use to poke holes. Once you're done carving your design, you'll want to see how it shines by lighting the pumpkin up!

You can use a serrated knife from your kitchen or the largest serrated tool in a pumpkin carving kit. Draw a circle with about a 2 in (5.1 cm) radius from the stem with a washable marker. Tilt the blade at a 45-degree angle toward the stem and push it into the pumpkin.

Like the ghouls and ghosts who spook us every Halloween, jack-o’-lanterns—so tempting to tiny predators and susceptible to mold and rot—are not really meant for this earthly plane. If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later. If you want to avoid the mess and decorate a pumpkin without carving it, then you could try painting it instead. A small paring knife or a craft knife may make it easier to work on small, intricate details.
